Area airports receive funding
BY TED POTTS
The Tribune-Democrat
Ebensburg Airport has received $418,000 in federal funds and $11,000 in state funds to carry out a runway safety project.
The project involves grading of land immediately adjacent to the runway to bring that area level with the airstrip, said Jim Loncella, president of the Regional Aviation Conservation and Recreation Association.
The association operates the airport.
The $418,000 is from the Federal Aviation Administration’s state block grant program. The $11,000 in state funds is from the state Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Aviation. The association is contributing an additional $11,000 in matching funds, Loncella said.
The project also will involve improving drainage surrounding the runway, he added.
The goal is to bring the runway safety areas up to FAA standards.
Federal and state grants totaling $10.7 million were announced Friday for improvements at 15 airports in 13 counties.
“Vibrant airports attract business customers and serve as a focal point in building a region’s business climate,” Gov. Ed Rendell said in a statement.
Among the projects being funded are:
• Somerset County Airport, $148,200 in federal funds, $3,900 from the state and $3,900 in local money for pavement improvements.
• Indiana County/Jimmy Stewart Airport, $4.47 million in federal funds, $176,250 in state money and $58,750 in local funds to extend Runway 10-28. The airport also received $133,000 in federal funds, $3,500 in state funds and $3,500 from local sources for new snow removal equipment.
• Joseph A. Hardy/Connellsville Airport, Fayette County, $1.9 million in federal funds, and $50,000 each from state and local sources for runway improvements.
