Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Raymond Sakmar of Johnstown have marked their 60th wedding anniversary with a dinner given by their children at Ace’s, 316 Chestnut St., Johnstown.
Mr. Sakmar and the former Agnes Marie Topscher were married April 23, 1949, at St. Francis Roman Catholic Church, Johnstown, by the Rev. A.P. Sabados. They first met in the fall 1947 on a crowded streetcar in downtown Johnstown.
Mr. Sakmar was born and raised in the Lower Yoder
section of Johnstown, son of the late Stephen and Ann Sakmar.
Mrs. Sakmar was born and grew up in the Conemaugh Borough section of Johnstown, daughter of the late Stephen and Irene Topscher.
Mr. Sakmar was employed by Bethlehem Steel Corp. for 35 years as an inspector in the metallurgical department.
He is a Navy veteran and a member of Knights of Columbus.
Mrs. Sakmar was employed for 27 years at Our Mother of Sorrows School, where she continues to volunteer.
She is a member of the YMCA Silver Sneakers program and reunion committee for the Johnstown Catholic High School, Class of 1945.
The Sakmars are active members of Our Mother of Sorrows Roman Catholic Church.
They are the parents of five children: Philip, husband of former Elizabeth Burkhard, Johnstown; Nancy, wife of Paul Turnley, Pittsburgh; David, Johnstown; Jane, wife of James Spisak, Johnstown; and Donna, Fairbanks, Alaska.
There are 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
